Hair Anatomy

  Hair is a filamentous structure that grows from the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, and is composed primarily of a protein called keratin. It is found on mammals, including humans, and serves various functions such as protection, insulation, sensory perception, and decoration. Hair Anatomy: 1. Hair Follicle : The hair follicle is the structure within the skin from which the hair grows. It extends deep into the dermis and contains the living cells responsible for hair formation. The base of the follicle is called the hair bulb, where the hair root is located. 2. Hair Shaft: The hair shaft is the visible part of the hair that extends above the surface of the skin. It is composed of three layers:   2.a. Cuticle : The outermost layer of the hair shaft is the cuticle.
